AIDS and its Effects

AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It is a deadly disease in which, the ability of a human being to fight diseases is lost. The basic cause is a virus called HIV which was discovered in the early eighties in the USA. It is the most tragic incident in the history of mankind after the dropping of nuclear bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It has been estimated that if AIDS is not treated and eliminated, it could wipe out half of the population of our planet by the middle of next century. The HIV virus can be acquired by a human body through:

  • Sexual intercourse with a person who is infected with HIV.
  • Sharing of needles or syringes of the person who has HIV.
  • Transfer of HIV from the AIDS infected mother to her child during pregnancy.
  • Transfer of HIV by a small or cut sharp edges for example, the razor of a barber could pass on the HIV virus from one person to another.
  • Taking infected blood of others.
